- The beginning of cell cycle is the interphase
- The cell grows and replicates its DNA in preparation for mitosis ( M phase) and cytokinesis
- Begins with a daughter cell from previous cycle entering an initial period of cytoplasmic growth
- The initial growth is called G1 (gap) phase of the cell cycle which makes various RNAs , proteins and other types of cellular molecules but not nuclear DNA
- If the cell is going to divide, DNA replication begins, initiating the S (synthesis) phase of the cell cycle
- Cell duplicates the chromosomal proteins as well as DNA
- After S phase, the cell enters the G2 phase (second gap)
- The cell continues to synthesize RNAs and proteins
- End of G2 phase, mitosis begins
