Chem 1000: Hess's Law

HESS'S LAW states the following:
If a process occurs in stages or steps (even if only hypothetically), the enthalpy change for the overall process is the sum of the enthalpy changes in individual steps
 
Note some of the following properties of H:
  • H is an extensive property
  • H changes sign when a process is reversed
