The entire mechanism of prokaryotic cell division called BINARY FISSION: splitting or dividing into two parts. Three periods:
- Growth before initiating DNA synthesis called B period
- Chromosomes are replicated and separated to opposite ends of the cell called C period
- Membrane pinches together between them and two daughter cells are formed called D period
PROCESS OF BINARY FISSION
- Replication of bacterial chromosome starts at the specific region called the origin of replication
- Once the ori has been duplicated, the two new origins migrate toward the two opposite ends of the cell
- Cytoplasmic division is associated with an inward constriction of a CYTOKINETIC RING of cytoskeletal proteins
